I’m thrilled to be introducing you to this new band today. David and the Curse is a project by talented LA based singer/songwriter/guitarist/producer David Stücken.

The debut album “An Epitaph For Love” is an awesome collection of songs inspired by love, life, and loss. It tends towards the darker side, but the music is upbeat and takes its influence from the greats of the alternative rock/pop genre. I’ve been lucky enough to hear the entire album in advance of its release (scheduled for early 2017). It is a brilliant album. It’s atmospheric, melodic, and addictive. The songs are catchy and memorable. The lyrics are a real observation on the world today, and the vocals are crisp and clear. Save your pennies because you will want to add this one to your collection.

The first single from the album, “She Loves The Night”, is currently being premiered on Substream Magazine. You can hear it at the following link: http://substreammagazine.com/2016/10/david-curse-premiere/

Welcome to Soundwaves Review, David! Introduce us to the band members of David and The Curse and tell us a bit about your musical backgrounds.

David and The Curse has been kind of a revolving door of the best musicians I know. The drummer on the recordings is a very good friend of mine named Jarrod Alexander. He played in a band called My Chemical Romance and also MCR’s singer Gerard Way’s solo project. He continues to pursue outside endeavors but when we recorded the record he and I just worked together tirelessly. I myself play all of the guitars and most of the piano parts. On the track “Queen Of The Blues” the organ was played by another close friend of mine named Greg Kuehn who has been in TSOL since 1982 and has performed with Bob Dylan and many other greats. That’s the beauty behind this record is that it is filled with musical greatness.

Wow! That really is a supergroup, made even more super with the connection to Nobel Prize winning Bob Dylan! 🙂 No wonder the album is so awesome!

You’re getting ready to release “An Epitaph For Love”, in early 2017. How long have you been working on the songs?

It’s hard to answer that question because as a songwriter I have songs for days. Some have been written for a couple of years, and some were written the day before recording, such as “Hole In My Heart”. An ex-girlfriend came over for the night and I wrote it the next day. I don’t know how to explain it. I’m always writing. It’s just what I do. I’m a poet. Without sounding “hot headed” about it… I just wrote.

I love the album. It sounds very contemporary and relevant. Many of the songs seem to be observations on human nature and relationships, and although it’s generally uplifting because of the upbeat music, it does touch on some darker subjects. Where does your inspiration come from?

Well, being self-aware I realize that I’ve put myself into the darkest corners of the world but I don’t find anything to be proud of about that. I think I’m just a human and I’ve not necessarily coped with my pain healthfully. But coming out on the other side I’m happy that I was able to channel my pain and experiences into something that maybe people can relate to. You know, as a songwriter you have to connect with people. Every song you write will mean something different to every listener and yeah, it’s not a happy album but my outlook upon promoting it and touring it is very positive.

I do think that there’s something about the darker side of life that we can all relate to as humans; as a writer I have found that my expression tends towards the darker side too.

Do you have a favourite song on the album?

“Figueroa Street.”

That’s a cool song. I can hear a Bruce Springsteen influence there, I think…

Is there a well known song that you wish you’d written?

“Sympathy For The Devil” by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.

That’s a brilliant song.

Who are your musical heroes?

Tom Petty, The Rolling Stones, Lightin’ Hopkins, The Ramones, Social Distortion, David Bowie, John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen. The list goes on. All the guys that told the truth.

Great list 🙂

What usually comes first for you, the lyrics or the music?

Lyrics.

If you could sing a duet with anyone, who would you choose and why?

I think that if I sang a duet with someone it would have to be cohesive. I think Tom Petty or Mick Jagger might get me. I would love to do it in the UK. Haha. LA is so over saturated, there’s never any movement for duets.

Well, you never know, they might be reading this interview 😉

If you could tour with any other band/musician who would you choose, and why?

The greats like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers or The Stones but they don’t need opening acts. I think The Cult would be a perfect fit. Just to match the style of sonic craftsmanship.

Is there a venue that you’ve always dreamed of playing?

I’ve played many I’ve dreamed of but, The Forum in LA would be pretty charming.

Have you heard any new music or bands recently that you’d recommend?

Surprisingly I really really like Lady Gaga.

So do I! 🙂 Saw her play live a few years ago and she’s amazing.

If you had to pick your 5 favourite albums, which ones would you choose (I know it’s an impossible question!)?

  1. Don Henley – Building The Perfect Beast

2. The Rolling Stones – Exile on Main Street

3. Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers – Wildflowers

4. Social Distortion – White Light, White Heat, White Trash

5. David Bowie – Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars.

Awesome choices; all very influential and enduring.

When buying music do you prefer download, CD, vinyl? And why?

I like them all except downloads. I don’t have iTunes. I listen to everything “as is” analog in one way or another. I have a vast vast tape and record collection.

Vinyl seems to be making a big comeback these days 🙂

If you could change anything about the music industry what would that be?

I can’t. You can’t change the world completely. Our society is so ingrained in the Internet that I think that the music industry is a product of our over saturated social media driven world in general. Things are here one day and gone the other. Lost in the fire. If I could change one thing though I’d stop the internet but then we wouldn’t be speaking via email so it’s a catch-22. The Internet has also made it possible for so many advances that I really can’t say that I know the answer.

Ha, ha! I’ve said that many times… stop the Internet! But yes, there are some good things that have come out of it.
