Gig review: The Slow Readers Club and Jackals Rose – Birthdays, London – 30 Apr 2016

I arrived at Birthdays last night just as Jackals Rose took to the stage. This young band are very impressive. They blasted some catchy and anthemic indie/rock music. They also did a brilliant cover of The Rolling Stones’ classic, “Sympathy For The Devil”. I think this band could go far.

I didn’t know much of their music before seeing them, I’d heard their excellent single “D.I.D.”, and it was a stand out moment in the gig for me; a definite crowd-pleaser. They seemed to have a lot of fans there for them.

I really enjoyed Jackals Rose’s performance. They reminded me of Nirvana in their early days. The singer has a great stage presence; a bit like a young Dave Gahan. This is a band to watch.

They have a few more gigs lined up, so catch them if you can.

The headliners last night were The Slow Readers Club. I think it’s fair to say that I’m obsessed with their latest album, “Cavalcade”. 🙂 I’ve been playing it whenever I have the chance. You can check out my review here: http://soundwavesreview.com/featured-album-cavalcade-the-slow-readers-club/

This band are exceptionally good at what they do. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to see them live. I was a teenager in the ‘80s, and The Slow Readers Club have somehow encapsulated everything that was good about ‘80s pop music, added their own deep, insightful lyrics, and mixed it up to create a magic formula. Anyone who liked bands like Depeche Mode, Bronski Beat, etc., in the ‘80s will no doubt fall in love with The Slow Readers Club.

They played quite a few of the songs from “Cavalcade” and also songs from their first album. I shall now be purchasing that one!

Last night’s performance was absolutely perfect. I invited a couple of my friends to come along; they are friends I’d met in the ‘80s, so I thought it was a fitting show for us to go to together. They also loved the show. One of them brought her boyfriend along (who is a musician); he enjoyed it immensely and said it was like a ‘trip back to the ‘80s’. I think it’s safe to say The Slow Readers Club have three more new fans now 🙂

2016 has been a great year so far for the band. They are about to set out on tour supporting James in sell-out shows across the UK. I’m confident they’ll pick up thousands of new fans along the way. It won’t be long before they are selling out the big venues themselves. They are a must-see band.
