I’ve been following BlackDogHat for a few years now. They’re a prolific band who are producing music that is relaxing and chilled indie/folk. BlackDogHat’s acoustic melodies are perfect for listening to when you want to unwind. Their songs are also very memorable and catchy.

When I asked John Sage (singer/songwriter) to describe the band’s sound in an interview a few years ago, he said: “… it’s acoustic music; sort of folky, rocky and funky, sometimes dark, sometimes fun. But all with stories and melodies that stick in your head… hopefully.” I think that’s a perfect definition 🙂

I also asked John about the inspiration for their songs. He told me: “For me, the songs start with guitar chords, then a melody; when I play the music and hum the melody I hear the words, almost like someone is putting them in my head, strange 🙂 Most of the songs are made up stories.

Influences at an early age come from listening to my eldest sisters records: Nina Simone, Cat Stevens, Leonard Choen, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, etc. But most influences come from everything in life.”

The band have some great videos on Youtube for their songs.

One of the videos won an ‘Honorary Distinction’ at the Athens International Digital Film Festival 2014. It was created by Panos Anestis & Nadia Katsoura after they heard the BlackDogHat song.

You can hear the band’s songs on Reverbnation and Soundcloud.

They’ve just released a new song and video, “Down by the sea”.
